How to verify purity of Honey?

Fake and impure honey have become commonplace in the market today, despite many people's preference of 100% bees' honey. The problem with this is, unfortunately, fake and impure honey can be passed off as pure very easily. When viewed on the2. helf, it is very hard to pick out what is pure, and what is not. There are, however, a few ways to figure this out.

1. Check the label. You would be amazed at how many people neglect to look closely at the label of food products before buying them, and then are dismayed to find they bought something they really didn't want. Check around the brand name, and the ingredients list (if there is one) for a mention of additives. The company should be required to list them if you are shopping in certain countries. If there are no mentions of additives, buy the honey. Taste the honey. If it seems off, and yet the label claims it is pure, there are a few simple tests you can run to check the purity of the honey.

2. The water glass test.
Get a glass of water. This and a tablespoon of honey are all you need for the first test. Empty the honey into the water. If the honey is impure, it will dissolve in the water- the most common additive to honey is syrup of jaggery, which dissolves. If it is pure, the honey will stick together, and sink as a solid lump to the bottom of the glass.

3. The flame test.
Get a lighter and a candle with a cotton wick. This test is better if you don't have as much honey to spare. Dip the cotton wick of the candle into a bit of the honey, and shake off the excess. Attempt to light the wick. If it burns, then that is completely pure honey. If it refuses to burn, then the presence of water is not allowing the wick to burn. (If there is only a very small amount of honey on the wick, though, it might still burn. It will produce a crackling sound, and it would be best to blow out the wick and try again if it does, this time with more honey.)

4. The absorption test.
Pour a few drops of honey on blotting paper and observe whether or not it is absorbed. If it's absorbed, the honey's not pure. If you don't have blotting paper, pour a little bit of honey on a white cloth, then wash the cloth. If there is any stain left by the honey, it is probably not pure.

5. The mixture test.
Mix equal part honey and methylated spirits. Stir well. Pure honey will settle to the bottom. Impure honey is more likely to remain dissolved and make the solution milky.

Hair care

In summer, the hot and humid weather results in a lot of hair problems.

In fact, very few of us have normal, healthy hair. Good hair needs good care. If you are suffering from problems like oily scalp or dandruff or hair-fall, then have a look at these tips below and try following them. Within a month you will see results.

DANDRUFF:

* Apply neem leaves extract with lemon juice on the scalp and keep it for 30 minutes, then rinse it.

* After shampoo, apply vinegar and lemon juice mixed in equal quantities on the scalp and keep it for 5 to 10 minutes and rinse it.

* Massage the scalp with jojoba oil or coconut oil by gentle inward circulation for 30 minutes and wrap the hair with hot towel for ? an hour. Shampoo the next morning.

HAIR FALL:

* Take 2 tsp of castor oil, 2 tsp of amla, 2 tsp of shikakai, 2 tsp of reetha powder, two tsp of fenugreek (methi) powder, 2 eggs and 2 tsp paste of neem leaves. Mix all of them and apply to the roots and keep it for 45 minutes. Then shampoo.

OILY HAIR:

* Mix 3 tsp of flour, 10 crushed strawberries, 2 tsp of amla powder and 1 tsp of white vinegar in cold water. Apply this paste on the hair and leave it for 40 minutes and then rinse it. This cleanses your hair and scalp.

Hair vitaliser:

* Grind a few hibiscus leaves and flowers and mix in 2 to 3 drops of coconut milk. Rub gently on the scalp. Rinse your hair after half an hour with a mild shampoo. It can be effectively used to treat various problems like hair-fall, dandruff and premature greying.

Hair tonic:

* Juice of fresh neem leaves cures scalp disorders including dandruff. It even reduces hair loss. A regular massage with neem juice can get rid of lice as well.

11 Ways to sleep better

Studies show that far too many of us are not sleeping well, and lack of good-quality sleep can lead to more than just feeling tired: everything from traffic accidents and poor work performance to crankiness, illness, and a less-than-attractiv e appearance can be the result of sleeping poorly.

To look and feel your absolute best, you need to get approximately seven to nine hours of deeply restful, quality sleep each night. Here are eleven simple tips so you can start sleeping like a baby. Find out how to get a great night?s sleep, right here:

1. Create A Sleep-Conducive Environment
The room you sleep in is vital to getting rest. Make sure it is dark, clean and has good ventilation. Try to keep the air fresh and the room temperature between 60 and 65 degrees for the best sleeping conditions. Make sure you have the right amount of blankets and soft pillows. If it isn?t comfortable, you aren?t going to sleep. Also minimize noise and light during sleep by using ear plugs and window blinds.

2. Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol and Tobacco
Caffeinated drinks and food such as coffee, tea, sodas and chocolate will keep the mind stimulated much longer than some people think.
And while alcohol may feel like it?s putting you to sleep, its sedating effect won?t last the whole night. Alcohol is a depressant; although it may make it easier to fall asleep, it causes you to wake up during the night. As alcohol is digested your body goes into withdrawal from the alcohol, causing nighttime awakenings and often nightmares. Excessive alcohol use can lead to dependence, and the withdrawal from alcohol dependence can also affect your sleep.
Nicotine is also a stimulant and should be avoided near bedtime and if you wake up during the night. Thus, having a smoke before bed, although it feels relaxing, is actually putting a stimulant into your bloodstream. And by the way, maybe you should think about quiting smoking for good.
3. Exercise Regularly
Working at the office might make you sweat mentally, but it?s not giving your body enough work. People who work physically strenuous jobs experience fewer problems with insomnia than those with office jobs because their bodies feel exhaustion too.
Get plenty of vigorous exercise early in the day so you?ll be naturally tired come bedtime. Try working out for as little as 20 minutes and your body will feel stimulated. Exercise will also help you get more oxygen to relax more. Remember not to exercise at least a couple of hours before bed so that you have time to wind down afterward.
4. Have A Bedtime Schedule
Your life may not be routine, but your body likes it that way. Try to fall asleep and wake at the same time each day-yes, even on the weekends. Figure out how many hours your body needs to feel rested and schedule your sleep that way, even on nights you don?t feel tired-it?s good practice and your body will appreciate it. Once your body gets used to a routine, it will naturally want to fall asleep at the designated time.
Keep your biological clock going in the right direction, otherwise you will be fighting against it.
5. Keep Bed A Place For Sleep
The bed should be for only one thing: sleep ? well, two things?but only for sleep and sex. Many people tend to read, work, watch television, some even eat in their beds, but your mind should never associate it with anything else. Let your mind and body identify that comfy spot with sleep.
Also, don?t watch TV or even so much as look at a computer screen at least 30 minutes before you lie down. The light from both a television as well as a computer monitor mimic the same intensity of light as sunlight. This fools your body and brain into thinking it?s nowhere near time for sleep. Also the best way to fall asleep is to clear your mind of all thoughts-the last thing you want is to lie in bed awake and thinking. If that happens, get up and do something non-stimulating, then try falling asleep again.
6. Warm Milk Or Herbal Tea
Looks like Mom had it right when you were a kid. Milk contains calcium to help you relax, while the warmth is also soothing. Milk also has an amino acid in it called Tryptophan that increase the levels of serotonin and/or melatonin in the brain which slow down brain activity. It?s science folks.
But dairy products aren?t always right for everyone-in that case, have a cup of tea. There are many herbal types that are made specifically for sleep aide, but chamomile, anise, fennel and lavender are known for their soothing and relaxing qualities.
7. Relaxation: Massage, Warm Bath, Meditation
There are plenty of ways to relax, yet not enough people do it. You can simply take a bath in warm water containing a cup of bath salts, as long as the water isn?t too hot. A nice massage after work or even a quick back rub from your spouse can do the job. Relieving tension and stress will help you clear your mind before bed so you can concentrate on sleep and nothing else. Play soothing music-even ambient noise will drown out street noise-while aromatherapy also has relaxation qualities, so you may put a drop or two of soothing essential oil of lavender or Roman chamomile on your pillow.
Meditate. No, don?t cross your legs and hum, but focus on relaxing?if that makes sense. Take deep, long breaths. Tense each muscle one at a time from head to toe. Focusing on doing this takes your mind off of other things and you?ll be in lala land in no time. Certainly there are other benefits as well. The Transcendental Meditation technique has been shown to produce deep rest, reduced anxiety, and very effective relief from insomnia.
8. Have A ?Going To Bed? Ritual
Do you have to think about washing your hair? How about showering?
If you?re like most people, these are periods of lost time where you?re doing something but you don?t actually have to think about doing it. They?re so automatic that you can daydream about anything else and come back down to earth when the task is complete. If we can establish such a state before sleep by establishing a repeated pattern, then we?ll set ourselves up for a perfectly relaxed state.

A typical pattern may be:
1) Read for some time
2) Brush teeth
3) Turn on fan
4) Set alarm

After following such a pattern for long enough, you?ll not only induce the relaxed state, but you?ll condition yourself to make the whole process more effective. Like Pavlov?s dogs, once that fan gets turned on (for example) our pre-programmed physiological relax-sleep response will kick in.
9. Don?t Nap During The Day
I know it may sound contradictory as I already wrote about the benefits of napping, but practically speaking if you sleep too long during the day, then this will disrupt night time sleep, so it?s important to find the right balance. But if you can?t find that balance you better stop napping during the day.

10. Don?t Eat Before Sleep
A light snack may be sleep inducing, but a heavy meal too close to bedtime interferes with sleep. Digestion takes lots of energy and will keep you awake. Also spicy or fatty foods may cause heartburn, which leads to difficulty in falling asleep and discomfort throughout the night. Foods containing tyramine (bacon, cheese, ham, aubergines, pepperoni, raspberries avocado, nuts, soy sauce, red wine) might keep you awake at night. Tyramine causes the release of norepinephrine, a brain stimulant.
But if you do get hungry close to bedtime, try eating something that triggers the hormone serotonin, which makes you sleepy. Carbohydrates such as bread or cereal will do the trick.
11. Medication
Insomnia stems from a number of reasons, and while it is usually due to stress or anxiety, it can be associated with physical disorders. If you find simple methods aren?t helping you fall asleep, it?s time to see a doctor.
Though doctors will probably suggest sleep tips first, they can also prescribe drugs to assist you in sleeping. Always remember that medicines have potential side effects, and though they can help some people beat insomnia, they may not always work.
These are the majority of the things I have either tried or actually do routinely. And remember that by improving your sleep you will have a dramatic impact on your body composition, performance and health. So good luck, and Sleep Well!

Heart Attack Survivors

Dealing with depression By S. M. Acharya

Depressed heart-attack survivors may not follow
medical advice as per study results that were
published in the Archives of Internal Medicine's June
26, 2000 issue. Depression does affect survival of
those recovering from heart attack. Fear psychosis is
the main reason for depression after heart attack.
Hence, it is very important for patients to study
about his heart problems and exchange notes with other
similar patients and also discuss the same with his
doctor. The doctors should also give enough time to
hear the patients' problems and give them proper
advice to build their confidence. Instead, some
doctors issue warnings about minor lapses on the part
of the patients which make the latter further
distraught leading to more depression.

My own experience as a heart-attack survivor is that
the remaining life should be considered as bonus years
which the survivors can enjoy by engaging in some
useful activity as social service which strengthens
both the heart and the head by the sheer pleasure of
doing good. Such survivors should do some things that
interest them the most or take to some hobby depending
on their ability, experience and knowledge. As for
example, a survivor may take to letter writing on
subjects in which he has rich experience. The
newspapers are full of news pertaining to corruption,
social turmoil and what not. The pen is said to be
mightier than the sword; so why not wield it?

The human mind is very creative. In my own case, one
of the reasons why I got heart attack was my nagging
backache due to which I used to be bed-ridden for days
together without much activity which made me
over-weight. When large scale degeneration in the
spinal area was noticed, the doctors' prognosis was
that even if spinal surgery was done, I could not hope
to be normal except that I would be able to do some
work but not as before. Hence it was no use to get
operated because with advancing age, the degeneration
was going to increase further.

So after studying every thing possible about
backaches and observing the instinctive behaviour of
animals and birds, I could devise some simple nature
cure exercises which cured me completely of repeated
attacks of backaches. That gave me so much confidence
that I could help many other persons to cure
themselves with the same exercises. Similarly, the
heart-attack survivors can find some such pastime
which can engage them in useful social service
activity which strengthens the heart. That would also
ward off any chances of getting depression too.

Simple Yogic Exercises

Three minutes a day;
"Keep the doctor away"
AND
When ever too tired; just lie down and do the same
relaxing exercises for about three minutes to come
out:
"FRESH LIKE A FLOWER"
each abd every time whether it is day or even dead of
night.

The following are the simple yogic exercises for
spinal health which is the master-key to all round
health of the body; mind and the soul:
1. Lie straight on a hard bed facing upwards, palms
under the head, relax and jerk up both the feet
towards the head without moving the heels. Rotate both
the feet, right foot to the right and left to the left
to join them again as before. Repeat ten or more
number of times.
2. Do the same movements in the reverse direction,
also 10 times or more and relax.
3. Jerk up the feet upwards as in 1 above and release
the pressure to go back to the original position, also
ten times.
4. Draw both the feet about two feet towards you, the
way it may be most convenient, as one normally does,
knees raised and feet on the bed, the way one keeps
them many times. Then lift up both the feet suddenly
keeping the heels there only. Then strike the knees
together quicly but softly and jerk back the feet with
a mild thud on the bed to the original position.
Repeat 10 times or more.
5. Lastly, draw back and straighten both the feet
together slowly at a snail's pace and when one is
fully stretched, take a deep breath and yawn to relax
completely. Get up sideways using the hands as the
lever without giving jerk and start walking normally.

Jumping Ropes

Get Up and Jump Rope

Jumping Rope is a portable workout that can provide a moderately intense, high-impact cardiovascular workout and assist you in maintaining or improving both health-related and skill-related fitness components.

What are the benefits?
Health-related fitness benefits of jumping rope include improved cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, muscle endurance and body composition. Skill-related fitness benefits include improved coordination, speed, power, balance and agility. Jumping rope is an ideal option when inclement weather drives your workout indoors. For travelers, jump ropes are an inexpensive, easy to pack and lightweight to carry as an exercise alternative.

According to one source, 10 minutes of jumping rope is equal to 30 minutes of running at a 5.7 mph pace. It is also estimated to be an efficient calorie burner at approximately 12 calories per minute for a 150 lb. person jumping at 120 turns per minute.

How to begin?
Start with as little as 60 seconds of continuously jumping rope. As you increase conditioning you can gradually increase your time spent continuously jumping. Once you are better conditioned, you can continue to work out in either a continuous fashion by increasing time, or in an interval fashion by interspersing jumping rope with periods of walking, marching or stepping. As you continue to advance, you can also incorporate more advanced jumping patterns.

Beginner pace - 30 to 60 turns per minute
Intermediate pace - 60 to 120 turns per minute
Advanced pace - 120 to 180 turns per minute

What do you need?
A jump rope and an area that allows plenty of room to swing the rope without interference. Cushioned athletic shoes are also recommended.

Who should do it?
Since continuous jumping rope is a moderately intense, high-impact workout, beginners should start slowly mixing shorter bouts of jumping with longer periods of lower-intensity options such as walking or marching in place. Since it is a high-impact activity, it is not recommended for those who experience joint discomfort.

Training Tips
The following tips will help you jump safely and effectively.

o Start slowly and take breaks between jumping intervals when you become winded.

o March in place or step up and down on a step in an interval fashion to maintain a cardiovascular workout.

o Keep your upper arms down at your side and swing the rope using your wrist and forearm.

o Try to stay light on your feet and keep a slight bend in your knees to lessen jarring.

o To progress toward more advanced jumping patterns, practice swinging the rope off to one side of the body with both handles in one hand to maintain the rhythm of jumping.

o Stretch before you begin to jump to lessen tightness in your calves.

o As you jump, concentrate on aligning your hips directly under your shoulders and over your feet. Often calves get tight because they are taking on most of the workload for every move. Stay relaxed, move from your center, and avoid landing on tense legs, ankles and feet.

Exercises

There's no denying the powerful health benefits of regular exercise. The Mayo Clinic has identified eight critical ways in which moderate exercise can positively influence health: strengthening the cardiovascular and respiratory system, keeping bones and muscles strong, managing weight, preventing and managing diabetes, fighting depression, pai n and stress, reducing the risk of certain cancers, and improving sleep.

How much exercise is needed to achieve these benefits? Aerobic activity (which increases your heart rate) should be performed for a minimum of 30 minutes, three times weekly. The Health by Numbers program encourages you to walk 10,000 steps each day or doing the equivalent of 30 minutes of aerobic activity. Some ways to fit in your steps or exercise include using the stairs rather than the elevator, walking or bicycling instead of driving or traveling by bus or taxi, and taking walks just to relax or as you catch up with a friend.

Ten thousand steps a day: A great way to get on the road to fitness and health.

10-A-Day Tips

You don't have to go to the gym to be active and healthy! The Walk 10 A Day Program is designed to encourage an active lifestyle which is important to maintaining good health. By wearing a pedometer that counts your steps all through the day, you'll see how close or far you are from achieving the daily physical activity you need for better health.

Walk 10 A Day - Easier Than You Think
If you have an average stride, it takes a little over 2000 steps to walk one mile ( 1.6km). Wearing a pedometer is an easy way to track your steps each day. Put it on when you get up in the morning and wear it until you go to bed. You might be surprised how many (or how few) steps you get in each day. Twenty minutes on the treadmill (at 4 miles/6 km per hour) can add approximately 4000 steps, depending upon your stride length.

Take it to the Next Step
If you are currently inactive, start with short walks on flat ground. A walk from 1⁄2 to 3⁄4 of a mile (or roughly one kilometer) can easily add a thousand steps, depending upon your stride length. Gradually increase the length and intensity of your walks until you reach the next level of activity.

If you are currently moderately active, continue to increase the duration and intensity of your activity. Find the walking pace that's right for you - maintain a brisk, comfortable pace and "walk with a purpose." Don't let yourself get out of breath; walking should never be pai nful.

If you are currently active, keep it up and spread the word. You are a role model for others. Enjoy your active lifestyle and the health benefits it brings. Record your progress during the year by downloading our handy walking log. Always drink plenty of water while exercising. If you will be out and about in the sun, wear a hat and carry water with you.

Tips for Adding Steps at Work

o Park your car further away from your building.

o Take the stairs rather than using the elevator.

o Use the facilities on another floor.

o Invite a co-worker for a quick 5 or 10 minute walk.

o Do a lap of your working area every hour.

o Take a walk break instead of a snack break or a cigarette break.

o Take a walk at the airport while you're waiting for your plane.

o Make use of fitness trails or walking areas if your site has them.

o Don't sit down for your next meeting - take the team for a gentle stroll and discuss business as you go.

Tips for Adding Steps at Home

o Take the family or the dog for a walk.

o Walk to a nearby shop rather than driving.

o Park further away from the store when you do drive.

o Do some window shopping.

o If you use public transport, get off a stop early and walk the extra distance.

o Instead of meeting a friend for a coffee and chat, suggest a walk and chat.

o In bad weather, go for a mall walk around an indoor shopping center.

o Explore parks, gardens and other places of interest near your house.

o Waiting in the car for someone? Hop out and stretch your legs.

o Enjoy an after dinner stroll with someone you love - after all, you care about their heart, too.

Walk 10-A-Day

Adults should engage in at least 30 minutes or more of at least moderate intensity physical activity on most, preferably all, days of the week. This will help prevent coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, colon cancer, and other chronic diseases.

The Recommendation
Public Health Experts at the Centers for Disease Control make this challenge to Americans: Integrate Physical Activity and Healthy Eating into Your Daily Lives.

An obesity epidemic - fueled by "supersized" portions, unhealthy diets, and lack of physical activity - contributes to 300,000 premature chronic disease deaths each year. Most alarmingly, the percentage of American children who are overweight has more than doubled since the 1960s - from 5% in 1964 to nearly 13% in 1994. These children are more susceptible to diabetes and the changes that occur in the early stages of heart disease and stroke.

This trend needs to be reversed, but will require broad societal changes in current views about food, eating habits, and exercise. Physical activity, whether walking, gardening, or more strenuous activity, must be integrated into daily routines.

The Help
Regular physical activity will help you in the following ways:

o Reduce your risk of dying prematurely.

o Reduce your risk of dying prematurely from heart disease.

o Reduce your risk of developing diabetes.

o Reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure.

o Or, if you already have high blood pressure, reduce your blood pressure.

o May reduce your risk of developing colon cancer.

o Reduce your feelings of depression and anxiety. (Physical activity promotes psychological well being.)

o Help control weight.

o Help build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints.

o For older adults, help increase strength and balance to be better able to move about without falling.

10,000 steps
The Health Care Team at GE supports the belief that to increase walking to an average of Walk 10 A Day will help everyone meet the current physical activity recommendation for healthy adults.

The Research
The 10,000 step recommendation has been used with a group of obese diabetic patients to reduce body weight and improve insulin sensitivity. (In this group the patients actually exceeded the recommendation and walked, on average, more than 19,000 steps each day.)

A group of obese children were given rewards for accumulating additional steps on their pedometers. It was found that the children significantly increased the amount and intensity of physical activity.

Though there is variability in activity patterns, pedometers provide a useful indicator of daily step counts.

Employees at a Nottingham (UK) industrial company were encouraged to follow a short, self-directed walking program utilizing pedometers. Small but statistically significant improvements in physical condition, as well as modest increases in customary activity, were reported.

A Drug to keep your things Clean

I would like to tell you of the benefits of that plain little
old bottle of 3% peroxide you can get for under $1.00 at any drug
store. My husband has been in the medical field for over 36 years,
and most Doctors don't tell you about peroxide, or they would lose
thousands of dollars."

1. Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the
bottle) and hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, then spit it
out. (I do it when I bathe.) No more canker sores and your teeth will
be whiter without expensive pastes. Use it instead of mouthwash.
(Small print says mouth wash and gargle right on the bottle.)

2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of "Peroxide" to keep
them free of germs.

3. Clean your counters, table tops with peroxide to kill germs
and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you
wipe, or spray it on the counters.

4. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour
peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria.

5. I had fungus on my feet for years - until I sprayed a 50/50
mixture of peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every
night and let dry.

6. Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten
minutes several times a day. My husband has seen gangrene that would
not heal with any medicine, but was healed by soaking in peroxide.

8. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and
water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your
septic system like bleach or most other disinfectants will.

9. Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50
mixture whenever you have a cold, or plugged sinuses. It will bubble
and help to kill the bacteria. Hold for a few minutes then blow your
nose into a tissue.

10. If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a
dentist right away , put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth
and hold it for ten minutes several times a day. The pai n will lessen
greatly.

11. And, of course, if you like a natural look to your hair,
spray the 50/50 solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it
through. You will not have the peroxide burnt blonde hair like the
hair dye packages, but more natural highlights if your hair is a
light brown, faddish, or dirty blonde. It also lightens gradually so
it's not a drastic change.

12. Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help rid
boils, fungus, or other skin infections.

13. You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a
load of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on
clothing, pour directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute,
then rub it and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

14. I use peroxide to clean my mirrors with, and there is no
smearing which is why I love it ! so much for this.

I could go on and on. It is a little brown bottle no home
should be without! With prices of most necessities rising, I'm glad
there's a way to save tons of money in such a simple, healthy manner.

How TV hurts your Health

A review of 35 academic studies by Dr Aric Sigman of the British
Psychological Society has revealed the top 15 ways in which long hours before the telly can affect children's health as they grow

1 Obesity: a result of little exercise

2 Disrupted hormones: light from televisions suppresses production of the key hormone melatonin

3 Lowered immune system: reduced melatonin may increase the chance of mutations in cell DNA, which causes cancer

4 Premature puberty: also linked to low levels of melatonin

5 Sleep disorders: overstimulating the senses causes sleeplessness

6 Autism: linked to a lack of social interaction

7 Increased body fat: altered levels of the hormones leptin and ghrelin produce fat and boost appetite

8 Poor concentration: development of brain cells governing attention span is impaired

9 Difficulty reading: a result of poor intellectual stimulation
while young

10 Type 2 diabetes: from eating high-calorie food while watching
television

11 Changes to skin immune cells: waves emitted by sets are linked
to changes in skin 'mast' cells

12 Increased cholesterol: a result of an inactive childhood

13 Slower metabolism: watching TV may slow metabolism more than simply doing nothing

14 Shortsightedness: staring at a screen can lead to eye damage

15 Alzheimer's Disease: additional daily hour of viewing increases

Gender Prediction

Ancient Chinese
Gender Prediction Chart

The Ancient Chinese Gender Prediction Chart is said to help parents predict the gender of their baby based on the Mother's age and the month of Conception. This chart is said to have been drawn by a Chinese scientist about 700 years ago. The chart has been taken from a Royal tomb near Peking, China and the original copy is kept in the Institute of Science of Peking. The accuracy of the chart has been proved by thousands of people and is believed to be 99 percent accurate.

Use the chart below if you were between the ages of 18 and 31 at the time of conception. Find your age along the left hand side, and the month of conception along the top row. Find where the two intersect to find the prediction of the sex of your baby!

This chart is for entertainment value only.
Although the results have been found to be incredibly accurate,

Cold Water and Heart Attack

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.

It is nice to have a cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks: Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack.

Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.
60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.
Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and Be aware.

The more we know, the better chance we could survive...
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10 people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life. Read this... It could save your life!!

Self Cure for Back Aches

Self-cure for Backaches:
A new prescription
By S.M. Acharya. M.A., B.Com., HDC, GDCA, CAIIB,
(Ex-Mg Director, Coop. Sugar Mills Fedtn.,1960s)

Frequently and repeated attacks of common backaches
are the single biggest cause of absenteeism from
productive work all over the world. It is estimated
that four out of five persons in the world, more so,
sedentary workers and executives at all levels suffer
from those nagging backaches resulting in loss of
millions of man-hours and billions of dollars worth of
production worldwide annually.

It is more common among the professionals especially
at the middle and upper managerial levels. With the
onset of computerization, Internet, etc., more and
more persons are spending long hours sitting in front
of their machines and screens, straining their backs
against the rule of nature, causing damage to their
spinal columns creating nervous troubles and aches and
pains of varied nature.

If timely precautions and curative measures are not
taken, the occasional troubles slowly degenerate into
lumbago, cervical spondylosis and several such
troubles which, if neglected, may turn into
irreparable degeneration of the ligaments and even
cancer of the spine.

The writer too having worked as an executive most of
his working life, suffered from backaches for forty
long years. He had to absent himself from work quite
often, sometimes for weeks together, on account of his
acute backaches; and was prescribed strong allopathic
medicines, pain-killers ointments, belt, traction,
heat therapy and finally was recommended for spinal
operation after the X-ray image showed extensive
degeneration of the spine with no prospects of
becoming a normal person with a normal back doing
normal work.

The condition was so bad that it was difficult to even
turn sides in bed without suffering excruciating pain.
It required literally crawling around to move in the
house or to go into the toilet or enter or alight from
a car. Driving long distances would cause more
trouble. Climbing stairs, gardening, walking or even
sitting at the dinner table, were all very painful.
This limited my normal activities still further,
resulting in over-weight and ultimately heart attack.

But how was it that animals never suffered backaches?
They could run much faster than men and fly long
distances without any trouble at all. That set me
thinking as to what could be done by human beings to
avoid such troubles.

The great Swami Shivananda of Rishikesh, a great yogi
himself, suffered from backaches. While going up hill
to a temple, he could not climb the stairs due to
acute backache. So he walked on all fours and climbed
up the hill and made it to the temple. It came to him
naturally.

Prevention is better than cure and cheaper to. All
animals and birds follow their natural way of eating,
drinking, sleeping, walking and even indulging in sex.
Man is the only animal, a two-legged one of course,
who goes on breaking all rules of nature and natural
behaviour. If man too could follow nature and all
natural rules, he could certainly avoid various
problems, including backaches. This writer did it and
got cured completely.

While it may not be possible to describe all the do’s
and don’ts in a short article for want of space,
interested persons can visit www.atbsnr.com for
details. Readers of ASCENT are also welcome to seek
more information from the author by email to him at
smacharya@yahoo. co.uk free of charge.

Briefly, the technique is a three to five-minute
toning up regimen. After waking up in the morning or
even after an afternoon nap, lie straight on your back
on a relatively hard bed, diwan or sofa with your
palms placed in place of the pillow under your head
facing upwards. Thus the palms support the spine. Then
try to induce natural stressing as if we are taking
what is called in Hindi an “angdai”. This is good for
even those suffering from cervical spondylosis. Don’t
exert. Just do it like an innocent child when he lies
in the lap of his/her mother. If you are already
suffering from backache, it may take a few days to
induce this stretching

Now remaining in that relaxed position, move one foot
clock-wise and the other anti-clockwise without moving
the heels, in a synchronized manner to complete a full
circle and then relax leaving both the feet in their
original place. When you do it in a relaxed manner,
each time when you take the feet apart and relax, you
will start enjoying it very much. It takes hardly a
couple of seconds to complete one round. That means
you are enjoying every two or three seconds. Repeat
this ten times or more if you have the time.

Next, do the same in the reverse direction. Doing ten
times hardly takes half-a-minute. Then take the legs
six to ten inches apart, as apart as you feel
comfortable. Then jerk up both feet together, keeping
the heels on the bed only. That will make both the
knees rise up slightly, feet working as lever. Then
strike the knees together, quickly but without force.
Then jerk back the feet effortlessly to their original
position. The knees will automatically fall down where
they were. Repeat this enjoying the relaxation it
gives. Do it playfully as many times as you enjoy.

Then finally, draw both the feet to the middle of the
bed so that the knees would also rise up; just like
when we draw our legs towards us when reading a book
lying on the bed. Now lift up the feet from heels to
toes but keeping the heels stay put in their place.
Then strike the knees together without force. Stay for
a second. Then drop the feet back to their place with
slight thud. This is highly relaxing for leg muscles
and for the mind to unwind from tiredness. Repeat ten
times or more.

The entire relaxing technique described above, takes
two or three minutes. Thereafter, start taking your
feet slowing downwards towards the end of the bed to
make them straight, thinking only that you are
stretching from head to toe in a straight line to grow
taller and taller. When fully stretched, then take a
deep breath, keeping your palms under the head all the
time. After fully inhaling, induce the same “angdai”
effortlessly. Then turn sideways and get up. If you
have neck pain, then put your palms behind the head.
breath in, raise your heels a bit as if you are
standing on the toes just for a second, take ‘angdai’
and start walking straight.

This way you can keep your posture straight throughout
your life without stooping as many aged people do. It
will keep you free from most aches and pains of the
spine and the joints as long as you live. What more a
human being could pray for?

Hence, the new good health slogan for the new
millennium is:
“Three minutes a day?;
Keep the doctor away.”
And,
When ever you are too tired, just lie down and do
this 3-minute stretching to come out
“Fresh-like-a- flower’ each and every time.

Doing this routin daily will find you a rejuvenated
person. There is a short 20-minute video film
demonstrating the exercises and explaining other
details that can also be screened at free demo camps
if Rotarians/Lions/ Senior Citizens’ clubs and other
establishments employing large number of people, could
organize such free backache-cure camps to make their
members and other citizens Backache-free;

Check Gas Cylinder Expiry Date

Have u ever heard about LPG gas cylinder's expiry date. I also didn't know.

How to find LPG cylinder's expiry date -

Very important information. Most of us do not know this. I came to know today from the gas stockist, because there was an accident.

Do you know that there is an expiry date (physical life) for LPG cylinders?

Expired Cylinders are not safe for use and may cause accidents.

In this regard please be cautious at the time of accepting any LPG cylinder from the vendor.

Here is how we can check the expiry of LPG cylinders:

On one of three side stems of the cylinder, the expiry date is coded alpha-numerically as follows A or B or C or D and some two digit number following this e.g. D06.

The alphabets stand for quarters -
A for March (First Qtr),

B for June (Second Qtr),

C for Sept (Third Qtr), &
D for December (FourthQtr).

The digits stand for the year till it is valid. Hence D06 would mean December qtr of 2006.

Share this message with everyone you know, UR kind cooperation will save life of many people and create awareness among the public.

Don't Use Mineral Water Bottles

Many are unaware of poisoning caused by re-using plastic bottles. Some of you may be in the habit of using and re-using your disposable mineral water bottles (e.g. Nestle, Bisleri, Aquafina, Kinley, Evian,etc...), keeping them in your car or at work. Not a good idea. It happened in Dubai, when a 12 year old girl died after a long usage (16 months) of SAFA mineral water bottle, as she used to carry the same fancy (painted by herself) bottle to her school daily.

In a nutshell, the plastic (called polyethylene terephthalate or PET) used in these bottles contains a potentially carcinogenic element (something called diethylhydroxylamine or DEHA). The bottles are safe for one-time use only; if you must keep them longer, it should be or no more than a few days, week max, and keep them away from heat as well. Repeated washing and rinsing can cause the plastic to break down and the carcinogens(cancer-causing chemical agents) can leak into the water that YOU are drinking.

Better to invest in water bottles that are really meant for multiple uses. This is not something we should be scrimping on. Those of you with family - do please advise them, especially children.

Moles on your face - What they?

First, check your face for any moles, and then look at the diagram above to identify the number(s) that are a closest match to the moles on your face. Usually, the moles only hold meaning for you if they are prominent and they are the only one. If your face if full of spots, acne or "little" moles, they do not count. When you've ascertained which position corresponds to the mole on your face, look up the meanings listed by numbers below.

Position 1 to 3
As a child, you are somewhat rebellious and a free spirit. You have an innate creativity and work best when you are given a free hand. Generally, your superiors like your avante garde approach to life. If you have a mole here, you are far better off in business and being your own boss rather than working for somebody. What is promising is that you have the luck to be your own boss.

Position 4
You are an impulsive person, often acting with a flamboyance that gives you charisma and a sparkling personality, but you can be difficult when there are too many opinions. You tend to be rather argumentative, but never to the point of holding grudges. This mole tends to give you an explosive temper and should you decide to remove it, you will find yourself becoming calmer and more at peace with the world.

Position 5
A mole above the eyebrow indicates that there is wealth luck in your life, but you will need to earn it and work harder than most people. All the income you make must be carefully kept as there are people who are jealous of you who might attempt to sweet talk you into parting with your wealth. Be wary of those who try to interest you in get-rich-quick schemes. If you have a mole here, it is advisable not to be too trusting of others. Follow your instincts and be cautious. And never allow other people to control your finances.

Position 6
A mole here indicates intelligence, creativity and skill as an artist. Your artistic talent can bring you wealth, fame and success. It also indicates wealth luck, but this can only be fully realized if you follow your heart rather than stick to conventional means of making a living. Success will come if you are brave.

Position 7
Moles under the eyebrows indicate arguments within the extended family that cause you grief and unhappiness. This will affect your work and livelihood. It is advisable to settle any differences you have with your relatives if you want peace of mind to move ahead.

Position 8
This is not a very good position for a mole. Your financial position will constantly be under strain because of a tendency to overspend. You also have a penchant for gambling. The only thing is you must know when to stop. Meanwhile, someone with a mole here has a tendency to flirt with members of the opposite sex as well as with the same sex. Better be a little discerning where you exert your charms, or you might get into trouble.

Position 9
This mole position suggests sexual and other problems. It is an unfortunate mole and you are well advised to get rid of it. It brings a litany of woes and a parade of problems.

Position 10
A mole here just under the nose indicates excellent descendants luck. You are surrounded by family at all times and will have many children and grandchildren. You have the support of those close to you and will be both materially and emotionally fulfilled.

Position 11
Moles here suggest a tendency to succumb to illness. It is a good idea to have this mole removed especially if it is a large, dark-coloured mole. Otherwise use lots of foundation to cover it.

Position 12
A mole here foretells a successful but also a very balanced life. You are likely to be not just rich, but famous as well. But although you have every opportunity to live the high life, you will have a satisfying home and family life as well. Women with moles here are particularly lucky and tend to be beautiful and glamourous as well.

Position 13
Your children will be a big worry in your life. Your relationship with them is not good. There is nothing much you can do about this except to learn some tolerance.

Position 14
A mole here suggests a vulnerability to food which can be a big problem in your life. You may have allergies against certain foods or you may simply be eating too much.

Position 15
You are a person always on the move and constantly renovating and redesigning your house. You like to be introduced to new things and see new places. You are not happy if you remain in one place for long. You enjoy travel and adventure, and have a very observant eye.

Position 16
You need to be careful when it comes to eating, and also when it comes to your sex life. These are your two biggest problems. You tend to have weight issues which can make you depressed. You enjoy romance, sometimes with more than one person, but because you are a person with some morality, you will feel guilty about it and this will cause you much stress.

Position 17
You will be someone of great social prominence. You are active on the social scene and an excellent conversationalist. There is a tendency to become bigheaded about your success, which could lose you your good name. This will affect you deeply because you draw your confidence and self worth from what others think of you.

Position 18
You are a person always on the move. There is a great deal of overseas travel in your life, but you should take extra care each time you cross the great waters, as your mole prefers you to stay at home.

Position 19
You have money luck and many good friends, so this is a good mole to have. Your weakness is that you tend to succumb to the charms of the opposite sex. In your life, it is this that could get you into hot water, so do cool your ardour!

Position 20
A mole here can be very lucky or very unlucky. If you have a mole here, you are destined either for extreme fame or infamy. You have great flair for creativity and are also highly intelligent, but your talents can be used for both good and bad. You are not a person to be trifled with for you are no pushover and do not forgive and forget easily. This mole is a mark of someone who will go down in history either as a great or as a tyrant.

Position 21
This is a good mole, as it suggests plenty to eat and drink throughout your life. This mole also brings fame and recognition.

Position 22
Your life is always happy and things go smoothly for you. You could well become a sports superstar if you have the passion for it. Moles at the end of eyebrows also suggest a person of authority and power, so if you are the CEO of a company, you will do very well.

Position 23
You have a high IQ, and you are both brain smart and street smart. You have a highly-developed survival instinct and will lead a meaningful and long life. You will be active until a very old age and will have friends and family around you till the very end.

Position 24
You will achieve fame and fortune in your young age and you are advised to use this period to safeguard your old age, as people with moles here tend to have a harderlife as they get older.

Position 25
You will enjoy good prosperity and recognition luck, but do be careful of excesses. Stay traditional in your attitudes and you will have a long and fruitful life.

Have Emotional Stability

10 ways to handle negative emotions

I am the managing director of a pharmaceutical company. My life is fairly comfortable -- I earn good money and am settled in my personal life too with my wife, and two children," says 32-year-old Kolkata based Ravi Khanna.

"But things are not as peaceful as they may seem. My family constantly complains about my irritability and lack of patience at home. I seem to react strongly to the children making a noise.

Also, my wife thinks I often lose patience when I take her out shopping. What is surprising is that I was not like this a few years ago." he adds.
Does Ravi's story sound familiar? Is this the scene in your home as well?

You are probably facing similar emotional volatility -- a state where you feel extremely positive one day and extremely negative on other days. In the down phase you tend to lose patience with those you interact with.

When does this happen? How can you overcome it? Prachi Vaish, a clinical psychologist offers help on both counts.

First, its probable causes:

1) Inability to find 'me' time:

Ravi is troubled by the demands on his time -- either by bosses and customers or wife and children. Maintaining the balance is becoming increasingly difficult for him. Ravi feels he was fairly stable a few years ago and these bouts of annoyance are new. He feels, that for all his accomplishments, he is at the moment missing peace in his life.

Ragini Sharma, a Pune-based interior designer, has similar issues. She comes home after a long day at work to a round of cooking and children's homework. Her children no longer enjoy studying with her because she tends to scold them more than help them learn.

2) Personal life issues:

Issues in your relationships with your spouse, friends and relatives, over a period of time, create stress within you and bring about emotional volatility.

Aditi Pariyani, a housewife, has been raising her two children in India, practically as a single parent. Her husband, who runs an electronics goods store in Hong Kong, seldom comes back to India to spend time with his family. Aditi is facing severe depression. She is irritable and has, over a period of time, lost her friends too, because of her emotional volatility.

Any kind of dissatisfaction from your current love relationship takes a toll on your well-being and the anxiety leads to a constantly volatile temper.

3) Post-retirement depression:

Prachi, who often deals with cases of severe depression and anxiety, rates retirement as a common cause of emotional volatility. "Women come to our clinics, wondering what has gone wrong with their husbands after retirement."
"He used to be fine earlier. But ever since he stopped working, he seems to have a problem with anything and everything at home. It's become impossible to even clean the room, as he will fret and fume about why his glasses were kept in a different place."

Prachi also deals with patients who behave nasty during phases when they are between jobs and have nothing to do. These people feel as though life is quickly passing them by, and others are growing in their careers.

4) Unforeseen circumstances:

Some of us undergo long periods of emotional volatility when an unexpected tragedy occurs in our lives. Like the death of a loved one, betrayal in relationships, etc

often throw us into a depression. And that brings about extreme patterns of behaviour. One minute you feel you will be able to pick up the pieces and walk again. But the very next moment you find yourself snapping at even your near and dear ones.

5) Inability to express yourself:

Are you unable to articulate your thoughts about difficult/unpleasan t situations? A shortage of communication skills is frustrating and can make you ill-humoured and oversensitive.

Rajesh Gupta hails from a small town in Madhya Pradesh. He has achieved success, thanks to a lot of hard work. But he has a complex about his English skills and lack of grooming.

It makes him unapproachable and ill-tempered. This works as a defence mechanism and has gradually alienated him.

II) How to prevent emotional volatility:

1) Meditate:

"The age-old science of meditation has helped one and all overcome the severest of anxiety disorders," says Prachi.

2) Try not to carry work home:

When the work day ends, end it there. Do not carry work troubles home. "Easier said than done", you will say. True, but "practice makes perfect", says Prachi.

3) Join a social cause:

When you shift focus from your own problems to bigger problems that people are facing in the world, it makes your pain tolerable. It also serves as a healthy cure for the issues responsible for your emotional volatility.

4) Be aware of your behaviour:

Observe yourself. This will help check negative behaviour.

5) Be aware of others:

You feel the need to be understood. But so do others. Be compassionate in your dealings with those around you and try to understand their situations. That will ultimately help you.

6) Enjoy nature:

Try going to the nearest garden in the evening. The grass and the plants may not be as green as they used to be when you were a kid, but you will feel a distinct change in the quality of air you breathe out there. The oxygen level is higher close to trees and plants before dusk.

7) Use transactional analysis:

Nearly all of us have witnessed behaviour patterns between parents and children. Transactional analysis or TA, developed by Canadian psychiatrist Eric Berne, classifies human behaviour as three ego states:
Parent (aggressive, controlling, nurturing)
Child (passive/submissive , defiant, impulsive)
Adult (assertive, balanced, real)
Each ego state is different for each person, as a perception of the parent, the child and the adult comes from your own parents, your own childhood and your own experiences in life, respectively.

The analysis establishes that all of us tend to use one or more patterns of behaviour from this set and encourages adult behaviour in situations of conflict. An adult looks at the situation objectively and instead of reacting in an impulsive way, asserts himself firmly but politely.

8) Read psychology:

Reading on psychology helps you understand not only why people behave the way they do with you but also why you react the way you do. It is therapeutic.

According to Prachi, "We use behavioural modification therapy under which, we recommend self-help books. I'm OK, You're OK by Thomas A Harris and Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Golman are two such books."

9) Express yourself:

"We ask our patients to join art, music or dance classes, as these allow free expression and hence are de-stressing in nature," says Prachi.

"For those who are not interested in these, we encourage diary writing. It is better to blurt (your feelings) on paper rather than to people. Not only does it allow a vent to the person's feeling, but also lets him/her go back to it later and analyse his/her feelings" she adds.

10) Organise:

Keep your home neat and tidy and your papers organised. Clean surroundings keeps your mind free from clutter. It negates the feeling of being overwhelmed and disorganised.

Stress Management

Once a professor began his class by holding up a glass with some water in it. He held it up for all to see; asked the students, "How much do you think this glass weighs?”

'100gms!' said the students

What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?
'Nothing' the students said

OK what would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?' the professor asked.
Your arm would begin to ache' said one of the students.

You're right, now what would happen if I held it for a day?'

Your arm could go numb, you might have severe muscle stress & paralysis; may have to go to hospital for sure!

Very good. But during all this, did the weight of the glass change? Asked the professor.

‘No’ replied the students

Then what caused the arm ache; the muscle stress?'
Instead What should I do? - The Professor asked

The students were puzzled. “Put the glass down!” said one of the students.

‘Exactly!' , said the professor.

Life's problems are something like this. Hold it for a few minutes in your head; they seem OK.
Think of them for a long time; they begin to ache.
Hold it even longer; they begin to paralyze you.
You will not be able to do anything.

It's important to think of the problems you face in your life, but EVEN MORE IMPORTANT is to 'put them down' at the end of every day before you go to sleep.
That is the only way, you would not be stressed,
That way, you wake up every day fresh and strong and can handle any issue, any challenge that comes your way!

Remember friend to
PUT THE GLASS DOWN TODAY!
That's the way to avoid stress in your life!

Healing Power of Your Mind

Gravitation is Power. If we understand the law of gravitation, we can lift ourselves into the air and reach our destination easily. But if we do not understand this law, we might fall down and sustain injuries.

Similarly Electricity is Power. Those who understand the law of electricity can reap great benefits. And those who operate it without understanding the law, would sustain shock and injuries.

In the same way, human Mind is also a Power. Those who understand the law of mind can reap great benefits including attainment of good health. But those who operate it without understanding the law, are in for shock and sickness.

People who know the laws of Mind and keep it cheerful and positive are likely to remain healthy than those who allow their minds to be filled with fears, anxieties, frustrations, etc. These pollutants affect our organism day and night, whether we are asleep or awake.

Thus fundamental cause of most sickness lies in the mind of the person. Disease is the outward sign of some inner mental disturbance. Such disturbance includes all emotions such as anger, aggressiveness, violence, depression, dishonesty, greed, jealousy, ego, hate, hostility, etc. which we listed elaborately in the last issue under the head “Diseases of the Mind”.

People seek to be healthy in order to be happy. But in reality, we need to be happy in order to be healthy.

Three Levels of our Diseases

Our diseases fall into three levels.

At level one, illnesses like fever, cold, sore throat etc. occur. They are temporary diseases which are meant to remove the blocks in our body. They go on their own after completing their job.
In majority of the cases, when level one problems come, patients take medicines. What these medicines do is to stop the battle between our body forces and the invading bacteria. Since the battle is stopped, we feel at ease. But the bacteria thrives in our body because there is no attack on them. Residing in our body, these bacteria create level two problems inside ourselves.

At level two, we get diseases like diabetes, arthritis, asthma, etc. These diseases are permanent and do not leave the persons. Here too the patients, instead of changing their life style, prefer to take medicines. Medicines make us feel at ease but do not cure..

Living with no cure, takes us to level three diseases like tumor, cancer, parkinsons, etc. which are fatal.

At level one, they are temporary diseases. At level two, they become permanent. At level three, they are fatal.

Understanding Diseases

Diseases of Body:

Temporary

Pregnancy Risk Factors

Pregnancy Risk Factors that Every Pregnant Woman Should be Aware of.......
Many factors affect the development of a fetus into a healthy child, some which are beyond your control and others that are within your control. Here are the most common pregnancy risk factors that can be controlled or influenced:....

Exercise - Moderate exercise is helpful as it improves the mother's mental state and can increase oxygen flow to the fetus. However, over-exertion can be dangerous. Most experts recommend reducing your exercise intensity during pregnancy. Activities like walking, swimming, and yoga are popular for pregnant women.

Prenatal Care - Regular doctor visits are important to your baby's development. The body undergoes many changes during pregnancy. Some side effects may be completely normal, whereas other may not. Regular monitoring by a professional will help ensure that your baby will be born healthy.

Exposure to chemicals - During pregnancy, reduce exposure to unnatural chemicals, particularly pesticides in food. Many people now eat organic produce, which is grown without chemicals. The simplest precaution to take before consuming vegetables or fruits is to wash them thoroughly. Also, removing the outer surface of vegetables can be helpful since most pesticides will rest on the outside of the vegetable or fruit.

Smoking - Smoking is not only bad for you, but bad for your baby as well. Smoking during pregnancy reduces the amount of oxygen that the baby receives and increases the risk of miscarriage, bleeding, and morning sickness. Chemicals inhaled while smoking may lead to other health problems with the baby. Reduced birth weight, premature birth, increased risk of SIDS, and stillbirth are other possible consequences. Pregnant women should also avoid second hand smoke.

Alcohol - Drinking can cause fetal alcohol syndrome, including symptoms like low birth weight, medical problems, and behavior abnormalities. As soon as you know you are pregnant, stop drinking. For more detailed information on problems that can be caused by alcohol,

Caffeine - There are many conflicting studies about caffeine and pregnancy and some believe that caffeine is not as harmful as it was once thought to be. Nevertheless, the FDA warns against caffeine consumption during pregnancy and suggests quitting or reducing consumption at the very least. Caffeine has been shown to affect fetal heart rates and awake time (fetuses grow when sleeping). Decaffeinated coffee can also be harmful since producers often add additional chemicals to remove the caffeine. Caffeine can also increase risk of stretch marks. Suddenly quitting coffee intake can cause headaches; so most experts recommend gradually reducing the amount consumed.

Drugs and Herbal Remedies - Always be careful about drugs or herbal remedies that are not prescribed by a doctor. These substances may affect the development of your unborn child.

Nutrition - Good nutrition is crucial to a developing child, particularly getting enough folic acid. Lack of folic acid can cause birth defects. At least 400-1000 micrograms of this B vitamin is suggested (about ten times more if you've already had a child with neural tube birth defects) starting one month before pregnant and throughout the entire pregnancy. Leafy vegetables, orange juice, and beans are some natural sources of folic acid. Many stores sell vitamins with folic acid.

Other factors - Many other factors can affect fetal development, including heart disease, the mother's age (before 15 years and after 35 years is riskier), asthma, excessive stress or depression, diseases, and bleeding. Consult your physician if you are affected by any of these conditions. ..... Learn More About Preagnancy http://online-articles.org/pregnancy/site-map.php

Hair Care Tips

First, identify your hair type. Is it normal, oily or dry?

So, who's normal? Well, if your hair isn't a constant maze of split ends, doesn't become oily quickly and is fairly well behaved, you could say it is normal. Wash your hair twice a week with a mild shampoo and conditioner for normal hair. Towel dry lightly. Blow dry from at least five inches away, whether your hair is normal, dry or oily.

Stress, hormonal activity (puberty, childbirth), thyroid problems and eating too much fatty food and chocolates are what usually cause oily hair.

Oily hair needs to be washed more often but don't scrub too hard while washing. It won't get your hair any cleaner or less oilier. What it will do is further aggravate the already overactive sebaceous glands on your scalp, not to mention cause damage to the delicate follicles. And don't pile hair on the head while shampooing, even though it may look great in the ads. It causes tangling, leading to further breakage. You could add lemon to the final rinse for a great shine. If you don't have time to shampoo every few days or feel lazy and leave it oily, your hair won't just look terrible, but dirt will get lodged under its surface causing breakage and damage not to mention dandruff. This will lead to skin problems such as acne on your chest, back and face. So you need to be careful about washing hair regularly, though you could condition it just twice a month. However, if your hair has been chemically treated, you should condition hair after every wash as chemical strips hair of its natural oils. Read more Tips :

If your hair is dry, wash it twice a week with a shampoo for dry hair, followed by a conditioner.

If your scalp feels very dry and flaky, use an anti-dandruff shampoo. Be very gentle with the ends of the hair, which are the driest parts and tend to split easily. You may be tempted to use styling products to tame the frizz, but avoid it. Frizz is usually caused by the inadequate flow of sebum from the roots, as it is being blocked by the flaky scalp. Give your hair a good oil massage before washing, to loosen the flakes, and rinse hair extra thoroughly.

Mobile Phone - A Health Hazard

Your mobile phone could be a major health hazard, research shows.

- The phones, the essential part of everyday life for 55 million Britons ( meaning hundreds of millions the world around) ARE CRAWLING WITH POTENTIALLY LETHAL BACTERIA.

With tens of thousands of microbes living on each square inch, they harbour more bacteria than a lavotary seat, the sole of a shoe or a door handle.

Microbiologists say the combinaton of constant handling and the heat generated by the phones creates a prime breeding ground for all sorts of bugs that are normally found on our skin.

They include Staphylococus aureus, which can cause illness from pimples and boils to pnneumonia and meningitis and is a close relative of the superbug MRSA.

Joanna Varran, professor of microbiology at Manchester Metropolitan University, said: "Mobile phones are stored in bags or pockets, are handled frequently and held close to the face.

"In other words, they come into contact with more parts of our body and a wider range of bacteria than toilet seats. The phones contained more skin bacterias than any other object. This could be due to the fact that this type of bacteria increases in high temperatures and our phones are perfect for breeding these germs as they are kept warm and cosy in pockets, handbags and briefcases".

Know your Microwave

Ten Reasons to Throw out your Microwave Oven

From the conclusions of the Swiss, Russian and German scientific clinical studies, we can no longer ignore the microwave oven sitting in our kitchens. Based on this research, we will conclude this article with the following:

1). Continually eating food processed from a microwave oven causes long term - permanent - brain damage by "shorting out" electrical impulses in the brain [de-polarizing or de-magnetizing the brain tissue].
2). The human body cannot metabolize [break down] the unknown by-products created in microwaved food.

3). Male and female hormone production is shut down and/or altered by continually eating microwaved foods.

4). The effects of microwaved food by-products are residual [long term, permanent] within the human body.

5). Minerals, vitamins, and nutrients of all microwaved food is reduced or altered so that the human body gets little or no benefit, or the human body absorbs altered compounds that cannot be broken down.

6). The minerals in vegetables are altered into cancerous free radicals when cooked in microwave ovens.

7). Microwaved foods cause stomach and intestinal cancerous growths [tumors]. This may explain the rapidly increased rate of colon cancer in America.

8). The prolonged eating of microwaved foods causes cancerous cells to increase in human blood.

9). Continual ingestion of microwaved food causes immune system deficiencies through lymph gland and blood serum alterations.

10). Eating microwaved food causes loss of memory, concentration, emotional instability, and a decrease of intelligence. Have you tossed out your microwave oven yet? After you throw out your microwave, you can use a toaster oven as a replacement. It works well for most and is nearly as quick. The use of artificial microwave transmissions for subliminal psychological control, a.k.a. "brainwashing", has also been proven. We're attempting to obtain copies of the 1970's Russian research documents and results written by Drs. Luria and Perov specifying their clinical experiments in this area.

Blood Pressure Chart

Human Blood Pressure Range Diagram

The 1st Number: Systolic pressure is the pressure generated when the heart contracts .
The 2nd Number: Diastolic pressure is the blood pressure when the heart is relaxed.
What is Normal Blood Pressure ?
Buy and use a blood pressure monitor. Compare your BP reading with the numbers on the chart above. Draw a line from your systolic pressure to your diastolic pressure. Is the slope of the line about the same as shown on the chart? Where do YOU fit in? What are your risk factors?
Are your blood pressure readings within the normal blood pressure range?
Should you take anti-hypertension medication to lower your blood pressure?
Normal human daily Blood Pressure Range can vary widely, so any single blood pressure monitor reading is not reliable. BP monitor readings must be taken at different times of day, to determine AVERAGE blood pressure over time.
What is important is your AVERAGE BP, or MAP (Mean Arterial Pressure) over time.Or, where are those numbers sitting MOST of the time?Normal MAP is about 93 mm of mercury.

Vaginitis

Vaginitis: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment
By Ben Kim, D.C.

Vaginitis is a condition that often goes unaddressed by women and their health care providers due to many people often feeling embarrassed about it. Vaginitis is also frequently misdiagnosed as a urinary tract infection, which can leave a woman unaware of lifestyle factors that are chronic, recurrent causes of vaginitis.

What exactly is vaginitis? By definition, it is an inflammatory condition of the mucosal lining of the vagina. A urinary tract infection, on the other hand, is an infection found in any part of the genitourinary (GU) system; the kidneys, the ureters, the bladder, and the urethra are the four major regions of the GU system where a urinary tract infection can take place.

For diagnostic and treatment purposes, vaginitis is typically classified into one of the following three categories:

Infectious Vaginitis - represents approximately 90 percent of all cases of vaginitis in women who are of reproductive age. Infectious vaginitis is typically caused by bacterial overgrowth, yeast overgrowth, an infection by a protozoan called Trichimonas vaginalis, or various sexually transmitted organisms.

Irritant Vaginitis - caused by allergic-type reactions to condoms, spermicides, topical medications, tampons, soaps, perfumes, douches, or semen.
Hormonal Vaginitis - most often occurs in postpartum or postmenopausal women in the form of atrophic (thinning) vaginitis. Hormonal vaginitis can also occur in prepubescent girls due to endocrine system imbalance.

Symptoms Of Vaginitis
All three categories of vaginitis can produce the following symptoms:
Itching and/or irritation of the genital region
Redness in the perineal area (area between vagina and anal sphincter)
Redness of the labia majora and labia minora - sometimes, redness in these areas can be hidden by pubic hair
Burning sensation or other type of discomfort when urinating
Vaginal discharge
Objectionable vaginal odor

When a woman is in good overall health and is able to address the root cause(s) of vaginitis, the symptoms can gradually diminish on their own. On the other hand, if a case of vaginitis is caused by an infectious organism and the woman doesn't take measures to recover, such an infection can lead to permanent health challenges. For example, a young girl who experiences vaginitis that progresses to a urinary tract infection can potentially experience permanent renal damage if the infectious process is able to travel up to the kidneys. Another example would be chlamydia-induced vaginitis progressing to an infection of the fallopian tubes and/or the ovaries, a situation that could result in infertility.

Causes Of And Treatment For Vaginitis

Infectious Vaginitis
Some cases of chronic, recurrent vaginitis can be attributed to a lack of proper hygienic care of the genital, perineal, and anal sphincter regions. Girls and women of all ages should always wipe from front to back after having a bowel movement. Infant girls should also be wiped from front to back when being cleaned after a bowel movement. Wiping from back to front can transfer undesirable organisms from the anal region to the vagina and is in my clinical experience, a common cause of chronic, recurrent vaginitis.

For the same reason as cited in the paragraph above, it is important to ensure that a woman's sexual partner does not make contact with her anal region and then make subsequent contact with her vaginal region. Because this topic can be embarrassing to discuss, it is often another overlooked cause of chronic, recurrent infectious vaginitis.

Infectious vaginitis that is caused by yeast overgrowth is best addressed by limiting or completely avoiding sugar and refined carbohydrates. Regular intake of beneficial bacteria (Here's the link - http://drbenkim. com/articles- probiotics. html) and raw garlic can also be helpful for Candida-induced vaginitis. Unless faced with a life or limb-threatening situation, antibiotics should be avoided, as prolonged intake of antibiotics can disrupt a woman's flora enough for yeast overgrowth and Candida-induced vaginitis to occur.

The potential for sexually transmitted organisms to cause vaginitis is one of many good health-related reasons to experience sex only in a mutually monogamous relationship.

Irritant Vaginitis

Because any number of synthetic chemicals and materials can induce an allergic-type reaction along the mucosal lining of the vagina, the best approach to treating all cases of irritant vaginitis is to avoid having synthetic chemicals and materials contact the vagina whenever possible.

Scented soaps should never be used to clean the vagina area. A plain, unscented soap like ivory can be used to clean around the genital region, but should not make contact with the actual mucosal lining of the vaginal canal; all mucosal linings are best cleaned with water only, as soap will dry out mucosal linings that are meant to stay moist.

Bubble bath and other scented products should not be added to bath water.

Feminine hygiene sprays should be avoided, as should contraceptive foams and suppositories.

Regular tampon use should be avoided if possible, as tampons can dry out and irritate the mucosal lining of the vagina, just as soap can.

Hormonal Vaginitis

For postpartal and postmenopausal cases of hormonal vaginitis, the best first approach is to ensure that the woman is not experiencing estrogen dominance. (URL - http://drbenkim. com/articles- uterine-fibroids .html) After addressing lifestyle factors in a way that ensures a healthy balance between estrogen and progesterone levels, if possible, it is best to engage in sexual intercourse (in a mutually monogamous relationship) with a natural, non-toxic lubricant on a regular basis. Regular coitus can help to stimulate blood flow and nutrients to the mucosal lining of the vaginal wall, which in turn, can help to add thickness, strength, and elasticity to this region.

For prepubescent girls who experience hormonal vaginitis, avoiding synthetic hormones found in factory farmed animal products is perhaps the single most important step to take to ensure that the foods they are eating are not contributing to endocrine dysfunction. Significant emotional stressors should also be explored and addressed in a safe environment, possibly with a professional therapist. Finally, prepubescent girls should make every effort to avoid the use of synthetic chemicals and materials in and around their vaginal regions. In cases where menses has commenced, it be may worth the effort of using cloth pads rather than synthetic ones that may be laced with materials and chemicals that increase absorbancy.

For all three categories of vaginitis, in some cases, the use of conventional medical creams can reduce discomfort and accelerate recovery time. Even so, it is in the best interest of every person who experiences vaginitis to be aware of all of the major causes of vaginitis described in this article.
